1. WHAT IS DELTA BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE?

The flight route and the fare booked, i.e. the travel class booked, determine how much luggage is included in the travel price and can be taken with you at no extra cost.

In all other cases, the following applies: Each Delta passenger may take one personal item (small backpack, laptop bag, briefcase, etc.) and one hand luggage with a maximum belt size of 114 cm or 56x35x23 cm.

Other baggage allowance options are available to Delta SkyMiles Medallion Membership or Dialog Delta SkyMiles® American Express Cardholders.

2. WHAT COUNTS AS A SMALL CARRY-ON BAGGAGE AT DELTA?

Each passenger can take one personal item (small backpack, laptop bag, briefcase, etc.) free of charge as a small piece of luggage (personal luggage). There is no weight limit. Not even for the size, but it has to fit under the front seat.

3. WHAT IS CARRY-ON BAGGAGE AT DELTA?

According to Delta regulations, carry-on baggage can be up to 56 x 35 x 23 cm in size (including handles and wheels). There are only weight restrictions on some routes, for example to Singapore (7 kg), Beijing and Shanghai (10 kg). However, be careful with code-sharing flights and partner airlines. The respective regulations of the operating airline apply.

4. WHAT ITEMS CAN BE TAKEN IN HAND LUGGAGE?

Liquids may only be carried in hand luggage to a limited extent. The respective containers must not exceed a maximum capacity of 100 ml each. A maximum of 1,000 ml may be taken through the security check. Best packed in a resealable and transparent bag of 20x20 cm (max. 1 liter).

Sprays, gels, creams and spreads also count as liquids. Even liverwurst. Duty-free liquids purchased either at the airport or on a non-EU flight route can be carried in a tamper-evident and certified bag. The sales receipt must also be in the bag. As a rule, this is automatically and correctly packed by the sales staff. You just can't open the bag.

E-cigarettes (with a maximum of two spare batteries) and a lighter (in your own pocket) must be taken into the cabin. Matches are strictly forbidden. Cigarettes can be taken in hand luggage.

All sharp objects in hand luggage are often prohibited by the airports themselves. Blunt or sharp tools or sharp objects and even the mercury clinical thermometer must be placed in checked baggage. Only scissors and tweezers with a maximum length of 6 cm and rounded ends are allowed in the cabin. Razor blades must have a plastic frame to be transported in hand luggage. Knives must not exceed a maximum blade length of 6 cm. That says the EU regulation. However, the airports have the last word with the possibly stricter guidelines.

A maximum of two power banks or lithium-ion batteries for portable electronic devices with a capacity of 100 Wh may be carried in carry-on baggage only. They must be individually wrapped to avoid short circuits.

Printer and toner cartridges with a maximum total weight of 500g are not allowed in hand luggage . They are only transported in checked baggage.

Excepted to/from the UK, guitars and smaller musical instruments e.g. B. Violins or flutes, are carried as free carry-on baggage on Delta and Delta Connection flights. It must fit easily in the overhead bin or in an approved cabin storage area.

For larger instruments up to a maximum of 75 kg that are to be taken into the cabin, an extra seat must be booked. The best way to do this is to contact the reservations department (customer service 0800-221-1212). But you should know: If the aircraft is downgraded and the seat you purchased for your musical instrument is not available, you will be rebooked with your instrument on the next available flight.

The best way to transport the musical instrument is in a hard-shell case with good padding and little room to move. Soft transport bags are clearly discouraged. If the instrument case has to be placed in the hold due to lack of space, this is the only way to ensure adequate protection and liability.

5. WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN?

In principle, it must be noted that in some countries there are special regulations for the entry or exit of underage children. Regardless of whether they are traveling alone or are accompanied by adults (legal guardians or not).

Delta offers air tickets with different conditions for children from 2 to 4 and 5 to 14 years old in their own seat. As a rule, children save 50% of the ticket price on most routes and on almost all fares. They have the same free baggage allowance according to the tariff as for adults..

Infants under the age of 2 years may travel free of charge within the USA without the right to a seat on their lap. With an international ticket costing 10% of the adult fare (plus fees and taxes), lap children are each allowed one piece of baggage measuring less than 158 cm and weighing no more than 10 kg, plus a fully collapsible buggy or stroller. Only one child is allowed on your lap. If you are traveling alone with two tots, you must purchase a seat at the adult fare for one child and carry an FAA-approved child seat. If a seat happens to be free in your row, a child seat can be used on it.

Baby food, sterilized water and milk are not subject to the 100 ml container limit. However, only a maximum of 1 liter of liquid is allowed. It may happen that you have to taste the liquids at the airport for security reasons. Be sure to observe the regulations on the import of food in your destination country.

Delta isn't explicit about what service they have to offer for the smallest travelers. This is what we found:
  • Appropriate menus for children over the age of 2 can be ordered when booking the flight.
  • Special bassinets can be reserved for long-distance journeys (for babies weighing less than 9 kg and 66 cm tall). Availability is limited.
This is what other airlines offer as standard and probably also Delta:
  • Toys (small puzzles, coloring books) are distributed to children.
  • Changing facilities in the washrooms.
  • Water for baby bottles is available on board, so there is no need to buy it at the airport.
  • Warming up baby food and bottles in the galley.
  • Child-friendly entertainment in the entertainment program (depending on the route).

Although there is no specific information about the allocation of seats for families, every effort is made to ensure that families are seated together if they check in early. If you want to be on the safe side, we recommend reserving a seat or contacting the Service Center. If necessary, the crew will try to find a suitable solution.

      Per child or infant allowed
in addition to hand luggage, the following free of charge
    with:
  • Stroller, buggy
  • Booster seat, child car seat
  • Breast pump and cool bag
  • Playpen, travel cot (as checked baggage)

Strollers and child seats can be taken to the gate or you can check them in together with the cot and the other checked baggage. All items that should accompany you to the plane should be marked at check-in. Before boarding, the items are accepted and transported in the hold. You will either receive it directly when you exit or you can simply pick it up at the baggage claim like the rest of your luggage. It depends on the destination airport. For connecting flights, inform the crew that the buggy is needed.

      Delta offers a
Travel program for children from 5 years of age traveling alone
The service is bookable for $150 each way and allows::
  • To fly alone with children between the ages of 5 and 7 on non-stop routes on some routes.
  • To fly children between the ages of 8 and 14 on non-stop routes and connecting flights on some routes.
  • To fly children between the ages of 15 and 17 on non-stop routes and connecting flights on all flight connections. From the age of 15, teenagers are officially allowed to travel alone, i.e. without this service.

Delta Air Reservations is responsible for this service. You can reach them on the telephone number: 0800-325-8847.

6. WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN TRAVELING WITH REDUCED MOBILITY?

Up to two mobility aids such as wheelchairs, aids, crutches or electric aids may be carried on board (either in the cabin or in the hold) in addition to the checked baggage. As a rule, the help can be used until boarding the aircraft, if necessary it is then stowed in the hold and handed out again at the destination airport either directly when boarding or at baggage claim. For this purpose, they are marked with a corresponding label at check-in. In the case of battery-powered wheelchairs, you should be at check-in at least one hour before departure, as the device must be checked in accordance with the dangerous goods directive.

Medically necessary devices can be taken in addition to hand luggage, provided there are no other items in the bag that do not belong there. In this case, it counts as carry-on baggage.

If you or a fellow passenger need assistance getting to the plane from the airport due to a disability or restricted mobility, Delta will organize this for you. In order to be able to organize everything in good time as part of the processes at the airport, the request must be announced in good time.

This is how you can register in good time:
  • Do you need help with your flight, e.g. E.g. if you need a medical device or a special seat or you need to take a service animal with you, you can do this via the "My Trip" portal or you can fill out an application form at least 7 days before your flight.
  • Requests for special services such as B. Wheelchair use, deaf/hard of hearing or blind/poor sight, special meals, peanut allergy, ... you can also put under My trips.
  • Call Customer Service Team 0800-221-1212.

For more information, contact Delta Airlines directly.

7. CAN I BRING A DOG/ANIMAL WITH ME AT DELTA?

Delta allows dogs, cats and even domestic birds (with the exception of Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam) to fly if they are at least 10 weeks old (outside Americas 16 weeks).

In general, the following should be observed when traveling by plane with animals:
  • Current entry and exit regulations for all countries concerned (ATTENTION: new, long-term entry ban by the CDC for dogs (including service dogs) from rabies high-risk countries).
  • Permissibility and the possibility of taking it with you, especially when traveling on different airlines.
  • Necessary official* and veterinary documents.
  • Any veterinary examinations or treatments that may be required (eg vaccinations, microchipping).
The following also applies to assistance dogs:
  • Proof of training as an assistance dog from a recognized institute is required for the dog.
  • In addition, written confirmation must be presented for flights that the dog meets the requirements for travel as a recognized assistance dog. A U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Travel Form is required. which must be uploaded to the Mein Reise portal up to 48 hours before the flight. For shorter-term bookings, this must be presented at the check-in counter or at the departure gate.
  • With a flight duration of 8 hours or more, you must also confirm that the dog cannot relieve itself on the plane or do so in a hygienic manner. To do this, you must fill out and submit the “DOT Relief Attestation” form.
  • Submit all documents, including those issued by the DOT (Department of Transportation) for verification in advance via the Accessibility Service Request Form in My Travel Portal.
  • The dog preferably wears a harness. A muzzle must be carried in case of an emergency and must be put on when requested by the staff.

*All flights within the EU/EEA must be accompanied by a valid third-country pet passport or official veterinary certificate (and required medical documents). If you are unsure whether your dog is entitled to travel, you can contact the destination airport before you travel and have the information on the pet ID card confirmed. You can find information on the pet ID card at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

One small, ventilated pet carrier per passenger, to be stowed under the seat, is accepted as carry-on baggage. Animals are limited to a number per flight, which is why animals must be registered in advance before departure (have dimensions of the box ready). Availability will be checked by Delta. If the reservation is successful, you will pay the applicable fees ($75-$200) upon check-in at the airport.

The following applies to the accompanying animal/transport box as hand luggage:
  • 1. One transport container per passenger is allowed in the cabin.
  • 2. There is a limit of one animal per transport container. However, there are exceptions for young animals or mothers with dependent young animals.
  • 3. The maximum size of the container is 102 cm (46 x 28 x 28 cm).
  • 4. The container must be lockable, waterproof and bite-proof.
  • 5. The animal must be able to stand, lie down and turn in its natural position in the closed transport container.
  • 6. The inside of the container must be lined with absorbent material. Newspapers, cardboard or litter are not permitted. Old clothes or a blanket are recommended.
  • 7. The animal is stowed on board in the transport container under your front seat.

Transporting animals in the hold:

DeltaCargo has temporarily suspended its transport service during Corona - a so-called pet embargo. It is not clear if and when the service will be available again. All information about the reservation, necessary documents etc. can best be found directly at Delta under pet transport pet transport.

8. CHECKED BAGGAGE AT DELTA

A maximum of 10 bags is permitted on Delta or Delta Shuttle flights, and a maximum of 4 bags on Delta Connection® carrier flights. However, depending on the space available, the number can be limited to 2 pieces per passenger at any time.

As a passenger, you can therefore use two pieces of checked baggage safely. Depending on the tariff and route, these can be purchased. Other baggage allowances may apply to Delta SkyMiles Medallion Membership or Dialog Delta SkyMiles® American Express Cardholders.

Key West, Florida restriction: Passengers are only allowed one checked bag on departure or arrival.

Maximum weight per piece: 31.75 kg.

23 kg standard luggage (less than 158 cm girth): For short trips with an extended choice of clothing or longer trips. The first checked baggage to the USA in the Economy fare costs $60 if booked online early, with the other fares the first suitcase is included. A second bag is $85 each way. For destinations outside the USA, two standard pieces of luggage are usually included.

Delta One / First Class: up to 31.75 kg is considered standard baggage (less than 158 cm belt size).

Excess and special baggage

Items larger than 203 cm or over 45,36 kg will not be accepted.

10. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AS CHECKED BAGGAGE

Musical instruments and equipment can be checked in as long as the overall dimensions do not exceed (381 cm) and the weight including the case does not exceed 75 kg. The regulations for excess baggage apply. A well-fitting hard-shell case with sufficient padding is required. Especially when transported in the hold a special travel insurance (luggage insurance) for your musical instrument is recommended.

On 767-300 models flying to/from Tokyo-Narita, Japan (NRT), musical instruments longer than 200 cm are not accepted as checked baggage.

11. SAVING TIPS ON DELTA BAGGAGE OPTIONS

  • Booking classes with a larger baggage allowance may be cheaper than checked baggage booked at a later date. With the baggage calculator offered, the baggage costs can be easily calculated and compared for each route and fare.
  • First checked baggage is always included for Delta SkyMiles Medallion Members.
  • You can save the most if you limit your luggage to the essentials.
  • Comply with carry-on baggage regulations so it doesn’t become expensive checked baggage at the airport.

12. MY SUITCASE WAS DAMAGED - WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

It is imperative that you report damage before you leave the airport, as it is your responsibility to prove that the damage occurred while in Delta's care. All damage must be assessed in person by a Delta representative at the baggage office.

If the damage goes beyond normal signs of use (scratches, dents, etc.) or is not the result of your own fault due to excessive filling, fragile or perishable items in the piece of luggage or the weather, you will be asked by the employee to fill out a form for damaged luggage. Applications must be submitted within 24 hours for domestic travel and 7 days for international travel.

Damage resulting from a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) search should be reported to that agency (tsa.gov).

13. MY SUITCASE IS LATE – WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

Go directly to a Delta representative at the baggage office. They will give you a case number, which you will need to fill in the baggage claim form .

Be sure to keep all documents together with all flight documents, especially the boarding pass and baggage tag.

If additionally paid baggage is delayed more than 12 hours, you can request a refund of the fee in the form of an Electronic Travel Voucher (ETCV).

If you had to do some shopping because of the delay, you are entitled to a reasonable reimbursement of expenses due to the baggage delay. Approximately $50/day, for up to 5 days, which will be offset against final claim. You can also use the CLAIM FORM for this and upload the receipts for your expenses.

The Montreal Convention applies to liability and reimbursement for emergency purchases on international flights. Among other things: Be sure to keep receipts, there is an obligation to mitigate damage (this means that the costs for emergency purchases must be kept as low as possible), but not in the event of loss on the journey home.

14. MY SUITCASE WAS LOST - WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

From a delay of 21 days, the suitcase is considered lost. In this case you are entitled to compensation. The maximum amount for replacement purchases or total loss of luggage is approximately €1,400. The amount of compensation depends on the content and any proof of purchase.

The baggage claim form can also be used for this purpose.

15. INFORMATION ABOUT STAYING ON BOARD

Inflight entertainment
Delta is expanding the network of WLAN hotspots. The plan is to offer Wi-Fi on all domestic flights in the USA by December 31, 2023 and on all international and regional flights by December 31, 2024. SkyMiles® members are currently free to use.

With Delta Studios, the airline's entertainment program, you can entertain yourself while flying with music playlists, films, audio books and podcasts. The entertainment is free and so are the headphones.

Sleep meditation or seated stretching exercises? Through the cooperation of the Peloton App and Delta, you can do exactly what your body and mind needs on long flights above the clouds.

What electronic devices can I use on Delta aircraft?

There is no specific information from Delta Airlines here. In general, nothing speaks against the use of portable electronic devices that have a flight mode during the flight. Airplane mode must be enabled on board. According to safety regulations in air traffic, the following applies:

When flightmode
is on

such as headphones, keyboards etc.

Laptop, Ultrabook, Notebook
DVD-Player

Catering on board
For flights within the USA, the included catering depends not only on the booking class, but also on the distance. During your flight you will be offered a variety of food and drinks from the galley. The offer is very clear and also limited. Especially on long domestic flights, taking food with you from the airport can keep you from going hungry.

You can find out what you can expect on your flight in terms of food selection here.

On international long-haul routes there is a small menu (starter, main course and dessert) of your choice. Plus a full range of drinks including beer, spirits and a limited selection of wine. Partly for a fee. At Delta One there are mineral water bottles on top before departure.

Are you dependent on special meals (Hindu, halal, kosher, gluten-free, vegetarian...)? You can order at least 24 hours in advance on the Delta Portal through My Trips as a Special Service Request or by calling 1-800-221-1212. Notify both the gate agent and a flight attendant on board that you have pre-ordered a special meal.

Delta specifically allows take-out of groceries purchased after security screening. But it should also be possible to take sandwiches or other food from home. Please note that for liquid foods such as soup, spreads and sauces, you are not allowed to take more than 100 ml with you.

Important: If you would like to take more food with you, inquire about the import regulations for groceries at your destination. The import of these provisions is not permitted outside the EU. If not everything is eaten on the flight and the import of certain foods is not permitted, you must dispose of the rest before entering the country.
