BARCELONA is the capital city of Catalonia and Spain's second most-populated city, with a population of 1,6 million on 101 km2. Its urban area extends beyond the city borders, and with the 4,7 Million people living there, makes it the sixth most populated urban area in the EU, after Paris, London, Madrid, the Ruhr Area, and Milan. Founded as a roman city, Barcelona was the capital city of the county of Barcelona during medieval times. After merging with the kingdom of Aragon, the city continued to play an important role of the Crown of Aragon.
