Tips for Your Business Trip
Driving to your vacation destination by car is a great alternative to traveling by train, bus, plane, or cruise. Good preparation is key to a relaxed journey. The advantage: you get to see and discover new things along the way, and remain flexible and independent. A road trip is always a little adventure.
1. Luggage in the Car
WHICH TYPE OF LUGGAGE: SUITCASE OR TRAVEL BAG?
The first question: What kind of luggage is ideal for a road trip?
Travel bags are lightweight and easy to handle. They belong to the “soft luggage” category – like fabric suitcases – and are more flexible. Thanks to their soft material, they can be squeezed into corners and fit perfectly in the trunk. The optimal choice for a car journey. Hard shell suitcases can be placed side by side or stacked, depending on their size.
IMPORTANT:
- Travel bags are flexible and easier to fit in the trunk – ideal for road trips.
- Hard shell suitcases can be placed neatly next to or on top of each other.
ADVANTAGES / DISADVANTAGES ON THE ROAD
Always pack your trunk with a system. Especially when traveling with kids, breaks are essential. If the trunk is overloaded, you might not be able to reach important items. So, pack in a way that essentials are accessible. Hard shell suitcases usually don’t have exterior pockets. Travel bags are better in this case because of their outer compartments — easier access to essentials.
2. Car Check Before the Trip
SAFETY CHECK BEFORE DRIVING
- Tires should have at least 3 mm of tread or be replaced. Less tread means poor grip and braking. 1.6 mm is the legal minimum. Check for cracks or damage.
- Check oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer levels before driving.
- Check wipers, brake pad wear indicators, and the expiry date of the first aid kit. Test the handbrake. Safety vests must be available. Test the vehicle’s lights — best done with two people.
- Store heavy luggage low and near the back seat or on the floor. Use transport boxes for loose items. Secure cargo in the trunk with straps. Never place luggage on the rear shelf.
- Check the vehicle registration for max load capacity (typically 400–500 kg including passengers). Weigh your luggage if needed.
- Important: Increase tire pressure before the trip.
- Winter travel: Don’t forget snow chains, antifreeze, and lock de-icer. Make sure rubber seals on doors and trunk are flexible and not frozen.
- Take regular breaks, drive well-rested, and avoid fatigue!
Road Trips with Children
HOW TO MAKE DRIVING EASIER FOR KIDS
Kids get bored when they spend hours in the car. They start whining, get restless, and ask “Are we there yet?” every few minutes. Their impatience can wear on our nerves, and we think, “Great, this vacation is off to a wonderful start!”
Good planning is key. Make the ride easier by letting the kids help pack their own bag. Audio books, music, or a tablet with favorite movies can help pass the time. Classic options: kids’ books, magnetic games, card games, or snacks.
