• As soft luggage, backpacks are more flexible than suitcases and therefore fit more easily into the testing device at the airport.

If your backpack is too heavy, does not meet the specified dimensions or if a large piece of luggage is no longer available for the flight, it will not be allowed into the cabin. It must be checked in as checked baggage. There are a few things to consider.

For some airlines this is not possible at all, for others a backpack only counts as bulky luggage. If you booked your ticket without luggage, it can be expensive at the airport. The straps and loops mean that the backpack can easily become tangled and damaged when transporting it to and from the plane.

Taking this risk, you should remove all items from outside pockets that are not closed, pull all straps and straps tight, close them and hide or knot them as best as you can. You should try to protect sensitive contents with good packing skills. Backpack covers provide additional protection. You can also wrap your backpack in foil or a large garbage bag (it is best to cut out the carrying handle) to protect it better. A name tag on the handle of the backpack is mandatory.

The backpack will also serve you well on this adventure, if it is made of strong, durable material and you have well secured straps.

The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air allows you to take one piece of luggage measuring 40x30x20 cm free of charge.

In principle, larger hand luggage can also be taken on board. However, each airline sets its own requirements regarding size, weight and price.

With Lufthansa, AUA and Swiss, one piece of hand luggage measuring 55x40x23 cm and a maximum of 8 kg is included free of charge with every ticket. In addition, you can even take a small bag measuring max. 40x20x10 cm into the aircraft cabin. In business or first class, you can even have two large pieces of luggage.

The low-cost airlines make taking a large piece of luggage dependent on the tariff, booked seat and availability, free of charge or as a paid option.

The additional hand luggage may be a maximum of 55x40x20 cm and weigh 10 kg for Ryanair and WIZZ Air. EasyJet, on the other hand, is very generous at 56 x 45 x 25 cm and max. 15 kg.
